Summer Session for Public Education on STIs and HIV/AIDS
Aug 2005

In collaboration with the Guyanese Ministry of Health and the School of Professional Development, University of Guyana, the Public Health Strengthening Project was excited to offer a special summer educational programme on STIs and HIV/AIDS, targetted to non-specialists in the general public. The three week course was enjoyed by 81 enthusiastic individuals from the greater Guyanese community, including administrative staff and members of other NGOs.

Participants learned, among other things: the clinical anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive systems, the signs and symptoms of STIs, the epidemiology and clinical aetiology of HIV/AIDS and related diseases, the medical and social implications of these pathogens on the general population. The session was based on a full course that was developed by the Project, and that now serves as a core course for all health science students at the University of Guyana.

Project Director, Roumyana Benedict, presents a
certificate of achievement to a successful course participant.
